My birthday is January 1st. People tend to think I get shafted on presents because it's so close to Christmas. I don't get shafted on presents, I get shafted on parties. That sucks because in my family, birthdays are the most important days of the year. That's the day that God blessed the family with another member. It's a day to be feted to no end. For example, one of the NMF was born on Thanksgiving. When her b-day falls on Thanksgiving, my sister and her family don't have Thanksgiving, they have a big birthday celebration. A huge party with friends and family. Cake, streamers, balloons, games and presents.
In my life, I have only had one birthday party on my birthday. It was in high school. That turned out to be a hot mess because my friends were still recovering from New Year's Eve. With my family, it was always the traditional New Year's Day soul food meal and then my presents as an afterthought.
If I do end up celebrating my birthday in some way, shape, form or fashion - it's usually tied into some New Year's Eve thing. Like the year I turned 25...I ended up at Mad Bar in Chicago. I went by myself and told everyone it was my birthday on Jan 1. I had a great time that night - everyone bought me drinks, the band played happy birthday, I danced. Don't get me wrong, it was a lot of fun, but it wasn't a birthday party.
My birthday dream - to have a party with my friends and family on my birthday. I want a cake with candles, music, good food, streamers or some other random decorations. I don't want it to be second fiddle to New Year's Eve either. One day it may even happen.
